Program Description

This nationally recognised course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to perform a pole top rescue within an Electricity Supply Industry environment.

Training covers the inspection and use of pole top rescue equipment, assessment of hazards, preparation of the rescue area, safe access to the casualty, release and controlled lowering of the casualty, and the provision of an appropriate emergency response.

The course is designed for ESI workers who may be required to respond to an emergency involving a person working on a pole or elevated electrical structure.

Pre-requisites:

Participants must:

  • hold HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • provide evidence of the prerequisite competency before training
  • have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to understand safety instructions and complete the assessment
  • be physically capable of climbing, positioning rescue equipment and lowering a casualty
  • wear suitable work clothing and safety footwear
  • comply with any applicable employer or Network Operator requirements

HLTAID009 is the formal prerequisite specified for UETDRMP017.

Upon successful completion of all training and assessment requirements, participants will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for UETDRMP017 Perform pole top rescue.

Program Summary

  • hazard identification and risk-control requirements
  • assessment of electrical and worksite hazards
  • inspection and preparation of rescue equipment
  • establishing and controlling the rescue area
  • accessing and positioning near the casualty
  • safely releasing the casualty
  • preparing the casualty for lowering
  • controlled lowering from the pole
  • moving the casualty to a safe location
  • casualty assessment and emergency response
  • communication with emergency services and workplace personnel
  • care, inspection and storage of rescue equipment
  • incident reporting and post-rescue requirements

Practical Assessment
  1. Review the rescue scenario and identify hazards.
  2. Complete the required risk assessment.
  3. Select and inspect appropriate pole top rescue equipment.
  4. Establish a safe rescue area.
  5. Access and position themselves safely.
  6. Attach the rescue system to the casualty.
  7. Release the casualty from the work position.
  8. Lower the casualty using an approved controlled method.
  9. move the casualty to a safe location.
  10. Assess the casualty and initiate the required emergency response.
  11. Complete the activity in accordance with workplace and manufacturer procedures.
Each participant must individually demonstrate the required practical skills.
