JSEA / Risk Assessment

Non-accredited workplace safety training that may also be incorporated into relevant ESI and operational training programs.

The participant must satisfactorily answer questions covering:

• hazard and risk terminology
• the difference between a hazard and a risk
• likelihood and consequence
• use of the organisation’s risk matrix
• hierarchy of controls
• consultation and communication requirements
• responsibilities of workers and supervisors
• review triggers
• difference between a JSEA and SWMS
• escalation of unacceptable or uncontrolled risks

Each participant must complete or substantially contribute to a JSEA for a realistic workplace activity.

The completed JSEA must demonstrate that the participant can:

1. Clearly describe the work activity.
2. Break the activity into logical job steps.
3. Identify relevant hazards for each step.
4. Identify people who may be exposed.
5. Assess the initial risk using the approved risk matrix.
6. Select appropriate controls using the hierarchy of controls.
7. Record the person responsible for each control.
8. Assess the residual risk after controls are applied.
9. Identify required permits, procedures, PPE or supporting documents.
10. Communicate the JSEA through a simulated pre-start or toolbox discussion.
11. Review and amend the JSEA following a change in workplace conditions.
